Summer comes with a certain set of inevitabilities. You will complain about the humidity. You will get sand in your mouth. You will begrudge both your office’s dress code, and your office’s inability to set the air conditioner to a proper temperature. And try as you might, prepare as you did, you will probably, at some point, get a sunburn. Now is not the time for us to lecture you on sunscreen and reapplications and how the SPF of clothing is not nearly as high as you think. Because you know what? Sunburns happen to us, too. Once you’ve got a sunburn, here’s how to deal with it. For relieving the pain Begin by taking ibuprofen, such as Advil. Start as soon as you feel the sunburn coming on and continue following the dosage recommendations for the next 48 hours. Not only will this alleviate the pain, but it will also cut down on redness and swelling. Aloe will also be soothing for a sunscreen. You can either purchase an aloe plant and squeeze fresh aloe right out of it, or purchase an aloe after-sun cream. For covering it up You know that if you already have a sunburn, the last thing you want to do is expose it to the sun again. But what if you have to go somewhere and you can’t help but reveal your sunburned shoulders, or a sunburned face? First of all, if it’s daylight, cover your burn with sunscreen and then moisturize. Following that, for your face, apply a green-tinted primer if you have one, and then a foundation (as opposed to tinted moisturizer or BB cream.) For small burns on the body you can use face make-up, but for larger areas you’ll want to pick up a spray-on panty-hose or spray-on leg perfecting product. (It can be used anywhere on the body.) For speeding up healing Strange how this happens, but somehow we seem to forget that a sunburn is a burn. They’re not treated all that differently. Drink lots of water to get yourself good and hydrated, and give yourself a soak in a cool (doesn’t have to be cold) bath or shower to bring down your skin’s temperature. After that, slather yourself in a good moisturizer, like Dead Sea Premier’s Body Butter. This will help your skin heal itself and hopefully prevent any peeling that could be headed your way.
